Jack was sitting on an Pan American Airlines flight from Boston to New York when he heard a worried voice over the loudspeaker: “Is there a doctor aboard?”

(by me)

Do you think the use of ‘sitting’ above is correct?

It's redundant.

Thanks, Rover.

What about using ‘traveling’ to replace ‘sitting’?

Something strange is happening to Piscean's posts this morning.

Sorry, I fixed it before I saw your post! It was definitely very strange!

Hmm, weird! You appear to have magic settings that automatically put everything after the first 12 characters to "centre justified"! Your computer is possessed.

As I noted above, when I tried to fix it I made it worse.:-(

Now I know the use of ‘sitting’ in #1 is redundant.

I'd like to make sure if it’s correct to use it in the context in #1. In other words, is it OK to replace the verb ‘traveling’ with ‘sitting’ in that context?

The verb sitting is perfectly correct and appropriate in your sentence, even if it is redundant. You don't need to replace it with a different verb.
