House numbers in many American cities and towns start from a central line and go both ways from there. My little town is divided by Xenia Avenue, a highway which becomes Main Street when it gets to the city of Xenia. Addresses on streets that cross Xenia Avenue are East and West. In an unusual quirk, we have three east-west streets named North College, Center College, and South College Street. Thus we get house numbers like 320 West South College Street.
