Where is the quoted sentence?

Re: "A bedroom, kitchen and bath were adequate shelter for his living needs."

It appears that the quoted sentence was written by somebody else. Who wrote it? It's not natural.

As it is written, "living" is an adjective.

Re: "A bedroom, kitchen and bath were adequate shelter for his living needs."

You need a new dictionary.

The phrase "living space/needs" is very common in English.

"Living" is the present participle of the verb "live". Participles act as adjectives, but they are not always listed with separate definitions. Try www.onelook.com

Click here and scroll down to definition 3.

The word being exemplified in that exercise is 'adequate'.

A better example sentence would have been

"A bedroom, kitchen and bathroom were adequate [STRIKE]shelter[/STRIKE] for his [STRIKE]living[/STRIKE] needs."
