In both cases, I'd say "a better choice for this job". You don't need "do[ing]".

When you say "Pete and Harry might mess it up" you seem to be saying they would be doing it together. Perhaps: "Either Pete or Harry would probably screw it up." (You could probably find other people who could screw it up also. )
