Is not 'a couple of hours' plural? So why do we use 'a' before 'couple of hours'?

I'm confused. couple of hours is plural in my language.

Let's find a place where we can just sit for a couple of hours, drink some coffee, and have a good chat.

"A couple" is singular.

Two people make a couple. Singular. Like a husband and wife. You can have a dinner party and invite three couples. Plural.

Why do we use an indefinite article?
