Dear teachers,
Would you be kind enough to give me your considered opinion concerning the interpretation of the expressions in bold in the following sentences?
I will spare your life, if you can pass a test of strength!
I tried to spare you.
spare = conserve, have mercy on
Please, spare my blushes.
If you really want to get rid the pests, totally and completely, you must spare no expenses to achieve this goal.
To spare oneself from grief at all cost can be achieved only at the price of total detachment, which excludes the ability to experience happiness
Spare the road and spoil the child.
spare = save, economize
We have enough and to spare, at present in these mountains, of schools where young infidels are made because the teachers are so tender-footed that they dare not mention the principles of the gospel to their pupils, but have no hesitancy in introducing into the classroom the theories of Huxley, of Darwin, or of Miall, and the false political economy which contends against co-operation and the United Order.
enough and spare = more than enough
Can you spare a few minutes to me today?
I have no time to spare today.
spare = afford, give, grant
I wanted to spare you embarrassment.
spare = release
