A mile into her walk, she spotted a gorgeous female mute swan near the water’s edge.

I think “a mile into her walk” here means “when she walked into Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge in Queens for a mile”. Am I right? And I also want to know if the use of “a mile into her walk” here is good English.

It's a common phrase. You can not only replace 'mile' with any linear measurement, but you'll also frequently hear it with time instead of distance.

'an hour into our drive', 'five minutes into my walk', 'two blocks into my run', 'twenty yards into my jog', etc. Sometimes 'not' is added to the beginning to emphasize how soon it happened.

Not ten minutes into my walk, I tripped over a fallen branch and scraped my knee.
