a. a new breed of international criminals

b. a new breed of international criminal
https://www.ldoceonline.com/dictionary/breed
Do both sound correct to you? I think that it is like "kind/type" and that "a new kind/type of" is followed by a singular or uncountable noun, so I prefer (b). What do you think?
