Hi,

Is something (stamp, car, coin, book etc.) a part of the collection or just part of the collection?

For example,

This old stamp is a part of my collection of rare stamps.

or,

This old stamp is part of my collection or rare stamps.

Thanks.

Both versions are acceptable.

Thanks for the reply.

What about if the the part is not a tangible object (for example, a name or a word)?

As in:

'Quixotic' is (a) part of my collection of rare words.

Still interchangeable?

Thanks again.

No, I don't think so.

I think or is a typo and the question is about the article before part.

Here, I would say "Quixotic" is [just] one of my collection of rare words.

Hello.:-D
Please allow me to ask a question here.
I understand that 'one of...' is usually followed by a plural (pro)noun.

"(The word) 'Quixotic' is one of the rare words that I know," for example, sounds perfectly OK to me.

"This notebook of mine has a collection of rare words." sounds right to me.

"This notebook is one of my collections of rare words." is...probably OK.

"(The word) 'Quixotic' is one of my collection of rare words." doesn't sound OK to me.

"(The word) 'Quixotic' is one of my collections of rare words." doesn't, either.

"(The word) 'Quixotic' is (just) (a) part of my collection of rare words." seems the best to me.

Do I understand it correctly?
