Is a period necessary after "the U.S." or "Co., Ltd." at the end of a sentence?

A. This product was made in the U.S..
B. This product was made by ABC CO., Ltd..

No, it looks ghastly. Have you seen it anywhere? In any case, there is a trend toward using fewer periods with abbreviations.
A quick look at the first page of a Google search for "the US" shows that the New York Times uses "U.S." whereas the Washington Post, and the Sydney Morning Herald use "US". The US government has it both ways with the following entry:

"USA.gov: The U.S. Government's Official Web Portal

www.usa.gov/
Official web portal of the US government. Contains comprehensive information on ..."

I would never end a sentence with two periods.

Thank you.
I haven't seen it anywhere, but a young American teacher at an English conversation school in Japan, who didn't have much experience in teaching, once told me it's necessary. I doubted it, and wanted to confirm it.

How about when the sentence ends with an ellipsis?

He said "I went there, but...".

It used to be a rule (or maybe it was a stylistic issue) to use four periods - three for the ellipsis and one for the end period. But there's so much variation even among good writers, that I've dropped the fourth period.
I might use it if I used a real ellipsis (…), rather than simply three periods (...). Note that a true ellipsis is one character, not three.
And there is no ellipsis on the English keyboard, so a one character ellipsis is dying out. This is only my opinion.
See the following:

I would not end a sentence with 4 periods either.
