When Erdogan first came to power, he was faced with a row of barriers that seemed at the beginning impassable. First, as a former political prisoner, who had served some years in prison, he was prevented from taking part in the state's political life either as a minister or a prime minister. Therefore, he had to be helped by several legislative moves in order to be elected for parliament and undertake the premiership. Second, until Erdogan came to power, Turkish military had routinely been intervening in the state's political life, seeing itself the defender of the pro-Western and secular republic from the school of modern Turkey founder Kemal Ataturk. Since Turkish constitution had granted the military a key role and the authority of decision making in every field, the military hadn't hesitated to take advantage of its unique position for intervening repeatedly in the Turkish political arena.
