Please, check if the following passage is grammatically correct. Thanks!

When Erdogan first came to power, he was faced with a row of barriers that seemed at the beginning impassable. First, as a former political prisoner, who had served some years in prison, he was prevented from taking part in the state's political life either as a minister or a prime minister. Therefore, he had to be helped by several legislative moves in order to be elected for parliament and undertake the premiership. Second, until Erdogan came to power, Turkish military had routinely been intervening in the state's political life, seeing itself the defender of the pro-Western and secular republic from the school of modern Turkey founder Kemal Ataturk. Since Turkish constitution had granted the military a key role and the authority of decision making in every field, the military hadn't hesitated to take advantage of its unique position for intervening repeatedly in the Turkish political arena.

Hello, Motico:

(1) As usual, you have done a great job.

(2) I would like to raise a few (mostly minor) points:

(a) elected to parliament.

(b) came to power, the Turkish military ....

(c) Since the Turkish constitution ....

(3) I most respectfully suggest a revision of your penultimate

sentence. Something like:

..., seeing itself as the defender of the pro-Western and secular

republic established by Kemal Ataturk, the founder of modern Turkey.

Sincerely,

James

James, I find your corrections very useful! Thank you very much!

I think you mean "a series of barriers."

Could you explain the difference, please?

A "row" is usually used in the physical sense. However, a "series" can be used for many things as long as they come along one at a time and one after another.

THIS is a row of barriers!

Could you explain the difference, please?

When I think of a row of barriers, I think of one thing you have to cross/surpass. A series is more than one thing to surpass.
