A verb for fruit juice...

Hi,

Would anyone please tell me if there is any general verb used when we extract juice from fruit? (For example, we can use squeeze for some fruits, but I'm looking for a verb to be used with fruit in general)

What's the meaning of "strain" in BrE? Is it used in daily English?

I suppose "to juice fruit" is one of the possibilities, isn't it?

You can simply say you "juice" something.

"Strain" is a normal word in America. What meaning are you having difficulty with? If you are using it with juice, it means to separate the seeds and pulp from the liquid juice. (Like passing it through a filter.)

In AmE, we use "juice" as a verb when extracting liquid from fruits or vegetables. We sometimes "strain" the juice after extraction to remove seeds or pulp.

And, in keeping with my tradition of "there is no question too obscure for me to relate to a TV show," here is a classic episode of The Cosby Show where Cliff, who cannot resist purchasing the latest in trendy gadgets, comes home with an electric juicing machine. You can "extract" juice. I have a "juice extractor".
