"A wolf found great difficulty in getting at the sheep owing to / due to the vigilance of the shepherd."

My grammar book says 'due to' can't be used in this sentence and I wonder why. ㅠㅜ

I think you can use "due to". You could also use "because of", which is probably what I would use.
