To this AmE speaker, "about" sounds odd in that use. I would use "of".

Here is another opinion.

"I care about my appearance." So "I take care of my appearance".

I agree with Mike; I would use "of" in the original post.

"I take care of my dog. I feed him and walk him."
"I take care with my dog. He tends to bite, so I don't let him off his leash."
"I take around my dog. Sometimes he bites me too."

Different contexts can also be found for appearances.
