Does this "ages" make sense? Is it a typo? Doesn't it have to be "aged"? If not, what usage is this?

It makes sense to me. It's a short way to state how old the children are.

A little bit of searching on the web revealed that credible news sources use this way of writing, as this example demonstrates ( Nation & World | Children, ages 4 and 7, left alone in California for 20 days | Seattle Times Newspaper ).
