I'm trying to write a script:

Classroom.

Just then, a teacher, Mr. Smith, enters. All chatter immediately ceases. Mr. Smith goes to his desk and sits down.

Question: Is 'chatter' correct and does it seem appropriate here?
 
(y) (And presumably the source is a work of historical fiction.)
Is that presumption based on the fact that kids don't shut up when the teacher walks in any more? 🤣
