Me: "Do" means now while "did" means at that time. Is that right?

Friend: It can be that, or it can also be that the difference is negligible. A bit like “might” vs. “may” or “could” vs. “can”.

I'd use only 'did'.

I'd also use different words - Which of the dishes we had tonight did you like best?

My choice of do/did is probably relative to how much time has passed between the meal and the question. If I'm asked that question before the meal is finished, I'm more inclined to use 'do'. If the meal has been over for a while, I'd favor 'did'.

I agree that the original version isn't the most natural way to pose the question.. I'd use a very similar variation of what 5jj suggested - "Which of tonight's dishes do/did you like best?"

It's it's customary to capitalise pronouns in that context.
