Which sentence is grammatically correct? Is "a" required before "city" in sentence # 3?

1. "Paris is an expensive city to live."

2. "Paris is an expensive city for living."

3. "Paris is an expensive city for life."

I don't like any of those.

'Paris is an expensive city to live in'.

(So are most capital cities.)

Right. Think of it this way: You don't live a city, you live IN a city.

The cost of living is high in Paris.

1. "Paris is an expensive city to live." "...to live in." or "....in which to live."

2. "Paris is an expensive city for living." OK.

3. "Paris is an expensive city for life." Understood in the appropriate context, but better options above.
