Hello, this is a question from an English Proficiency test.



A lot of trains _____________ late today due to heavy storms.

(a) are run (b) run (c) were run (d) ran


I am still confused wih (a) and (c). I chose (a)....(since "today" seems to go with the present tense) but I am not sure about my answer at all and still have no idea of which one is correct. Could you tell me which one is correct and why? Thank you in advance!

You could say a lot of trains are running late today, but that's not one of your choices, is it?

The end should be either "a heavy storm" or "heavy storms".

Given the choices, only "ran" works. The speaker must be talking about earlier today.

Also, please note that your title included the ungrammatical word "runned" while the answers included the grammatical "ran."
