Hello, this is a question from an English Proficiency test.

A lot of trains _____________ late today due to heavy storms.

(a) are run (b) run (c) were run (d) ran

I am still confused wih (a) and (c). I chose (a)....(since "today" seems to go with the present tense) but I am not sure about my answer at all and still have no idea of which one is correct. Could you tell me which one is correct and why? Thank you in advance!

Dear amiable25
That's not how this forum works. First, you tell us which option you think is correct, and then we will comment.
Also, please check the spelling of the words you have typed.

Re: are run/ run/ were run/ runned

I am sorry, Grumpy. I have edited the original post.

I am not a teacher.

Are you sure it's, 'today late' and not, 'late today'?

Re: are run/ run/ were run/ runned

Sorry, I've corrected it. Since I memorized the question from the paper, there was confusion.. TT

Re: are run/ run/ were run/ runned

You could say a lot of trains are running late today, but that's not one of your choices, is it?

Re: are run/ run/ were run/ runned

The end should be either "a heavy storm" or "heavy storms".

Given the choices, only "ran" works. The speaker must be talking about earlier today.

Re: are run/ run/ were run/ runned

Also, please note that your title included the ungrammatical word "runned" while the answers included the grammatical "ran."

Re: are run/ run/ were run/ runned

Thank you for telling me. I have edited my post once again.

For me, the answer to your question is D.

Amiable25, please do not edit a post after somebody has responded to it. (That tends to cause confusion.)

:)
