Good point! Of course, that might mean the Sudan is a big four-door car and the Ukraine is a bunch of little Hawaiian stringed instruments falling out of the sky. . . .We generally use the definite article before countries when the official name tells us the nature of the country:
The Czech Republic
The United Kingdom
The United States of America
The Federal Republic of Germany
The United Arab Emirates.
We haven't used the definite article with Ukraine since that country became independent in 1991.Of course, that might mean the Sudan is a big four-door car and the Ukraine is a bunch of little Hawaiian stringed instruments falling out of the sky. . . .
