Are you a family man?

When I was in Canada, I once had an interview with a company, and the interviewer asked me "Are you a family man?". The position offered a small payment for college students, so the salary wasn't sufficient for a man with a family, that's why he was worried and asked if it was okay to accept the job.
But I thought of the expression literally, and answered "Yes, I have a family, my wife, son......"
Does "family man" always mean a man who cherishes his family or sometimes a plain meaning of a man who has a family?

He's simply a man who has a family.

You need to add an adjective like devoted if you want to emphasise his emotional attachment to his family.
