Education of the late 20[SUP]th[/SUP]-early 21[SUP]st[/SUP] centuries is marked with a precipitous decline in the prestige of the teacher.

In this sentence, I feel there may be a need to place "the" in front of "education". Do we need it? Thank you in advance.

I'd use 'in' rather than 'of', and no article.

5jj, your help is greatly appreciated. You've been a true magic wand for countless forumers. Cheers!

I can see why you wanted to use 'the' - it seems to be a specified education. It's the 'of' that would make the definite article desirable - if we were talking about the education of a person or of people.

Yes - that's what I thought. To be honest, my current work mostly involves translating, since I'm gradually losing faith in teaching English. The two languages are so different that I find it more rewarding to just do translating. Although I still do some teaching, translation is becoming my major area of activity. And nuances like the one you've cleared up for me permeate the majority of material I deal with. In any case, I find this forum a great resource. It's helped me a lot. Keep up the good work!
