as well as -simple past

Hi,

1) As well as eating out, we went to the cinema. (That's OK)

2) As well as ate out, we went to the cinema. (The simple past) (Is that OK?)

My question is that can we use the second choice instead of the one because of the verb ''ate''?

Agree, and as I have indicated previously I am not a fan of (or at least I prefer not to use) the terms "as well as" and "as well". I just think that they are overused particularly in the broadcast/TV media. There is, of course, nothing "wrong" with their use, but in aysaa's example #1 I would replace "as well as" with "in addition to" and with regard to "as well", I would be inclined to replace with a simple "too". Just a personal quirk.
