Ask sb out VS. ask sb on a date

I have a doubt about "ask sb on a date" (as in: "Did you really ask her on a date!?" Meaning: "Did you really ask her out (on a date)!?"). Is it correct? I really think I've herd it before but I'm just not sure about it.
