Are the following sentences acceptable? What's the difference between the two sentences?

(1) We assume (that) most successful person don't graduate from top universities.
(2) Most successful person don't graduate from top universities (that) we assume.

Do you mean one person?

After I asked for advice from an English teacher, he revised the sentences as following.

(1) Most successful people don't graduate from what we assume to be top universities.
(2) Most successful people don't graduate from what are assumed to be top universities.
(3) Most successful people don't graduate from top universities that are assumed to be top ones.

1 and 2 are fine -- the only difference is actively stating who does the assuming.
3 is a mess.

Are we assuming that the people don't graduate from "top universities" or are we assuming that certain universities are the "top universities"?
