I have always suspected that 'back home' as in 'I will bath as soon as I back home' is not quite grammatical. Am I right? I've seen 'back' used as a verb in this way many times and I'm no longer sure if I'm right or not.

"I will bath" is incorrect. It should be "I will bathe." The "back" can be omitted, but is not wrong. Given that you live in Hong Kong, you understand the feeling: As soon as I get (back) home I will take a cool bath. Then I will feel fine.

The sentence as it stands is incorrect; 'back' is not a verb in that sentence.
You can omit the 'back' if you wish, but you must have a verb, am/get/etc.
