It's impossible to say which variant is better, since you've only given one - "going to go". I can say it's correct, though.

Yes, I've heard that too. But in real life they DO say 'I'm gonna go' (= I am going to go). Take it from me - 15 years in the US. The problem is we can't always prevent people from speaking the way most native speakers do.

Wouldn't you strive to speak the way most natives do?

It's not that natives "don't follow the rules." The rules exist to show how the people who own the language, the native speakers, actually use it. That's why things change over time.

The book does say usually- many speakers will omit to go, but this is not a rule, just a common pattern. It doesn't matter which way you say it IMO.
