[Grammar] before replying to

- Mia completes/completed her assignments before replying to her emails.

I am wondering if I can write the above sentence using "completes" instead of past tense.
I think due to "replying", it is more appropriate to use "completed" since "replying" can be written as "she replied".

Completes: she regularly or habitually does so.

Completed: she did so in the past at least once.

They're equally appropriate depending on the intended meaning.
