What does the phrase "blues are spared" actually mean in this sentence?

33' Troost-Ekong makes a mess of a defensive header, but his blushes are spared when Foden then turns quickly and shoots over from inside the Watford area.

It's 'blushes' — not 'blues'. (I've edited your thread title).
Troost-Ekong would have been embarrassed if Foden had scored as a result of his mistake.
