And, look, for a long time, it didn't matter that these borscht ballers kept all their wealth in the West. But that changed real quick when these sanctions started getting passed.

What do you think he meant by " borscht ballers"? Is it this meaning of "baller"?

  1. (African-American Vernacular, slang) One who has swag and lives an extravagant lifestyle.
Did you see that car? He’s such a baller.

You've got the "baller" part exactly right, and from there it's easy. With what people does the world associate borscht? Mainly Russians of course.

Mainly Russians of course.
It's complicated:)

Ostap, you quoted an American originally. I don't expect Americans, generally speaking, to know much about Ukraine.

I'm pretty sure Trevor Noah is not American but South African, although he is currently living in New York.

Trevor Noah is a South African comedian and political commentator. He is extremely intelligent and thoroughly researches his topics. He will know more than enough about Ukraine to speak on the topic.
You're probably right that many Americans (and other nationalities) didn't know much about Ukraine until February 24th. However, since then, people from all over the world have been educating themselves about the country, its history and its people.

One of the advantages of hosting Ukrainian guests at the moment is that my wife and I are enjoying wonderful home-cooked borscht.

😁

I thought it was a Russian soup until a few weeks ago. You live and learn.

And the inimitable Fyvush Finkel. 😀👍
