One of my friends who works in cosmetic industry wants to choose a brand name. He asked me to help him because he thinks my English is better than his English. They want to mix these two words "pharma" and "cis" and make "pharmacis" or "pharma cis". They want to know if this combination is possible and it doesn't have a negative or bad meaning. And what can the new word (pharmacis / pharma cis) mean?

Ok, it doesn't mean anything. But it can be a brand name, can't it? I mean do we always have to choose a meaningful brand name or can it be a made-up name without any meaning?

Your chosen name may well remind people of pharmacist. This may or may not be a good thing.

It really will depend on what the product is. As 5jj said, the word is so close to "pharmacist" that unless the product is medically-related in some way, it will be rather confusing. Do you know why your friend wants to use "pharma" at the beginning of the brand name, given its connotations?

A brand name should ideally be unique, catchy and not ambiguous.
'Pharma cis' is rather ambiguous as it sounds almost like pharmacist.

Help me understand how 'cosmetics' is remotely connected to 'pharma cis'! The connection just isn't there! :-(

Pharma doesn't sound good to me for cosmetics either- they're not medicine.

Unless the products are medicinal cosmetics, don't use that name. It is misleading, confusing, and probably will end up being detrimental to the company or brand. In fact, it could have a negative connotation in this aspect, because, at least as far as I'm concerned, people don't want medicine in their cosmetics.

Also, people use the term Big Pharma as a critical name for the industry, so it might have negative connotations.
