"Building off this example, imagine a closed-loop process with carbon and oxegen."

What does "building off" mean here?

I think it means "Starting from the basis of this example" (presumably an example which has already been given). Note the correct spelling of "oxygen".

I must admit that initially I thought "building off" sounded odd but then I considered it a little like "Kicking off [from]", where it means that the first thing is used as thing to add impetus to something else.
 
:up: That's the one - 'kicking off'. I was pretty sure that there was a conflation here of two phrasal verbs, but I couldn't call to mind the one with 'off'.
