Hello,

I am not sure if I understand the sentence below correctly.

"Nor had all Park Lane, with bulging manner and pocketbook, been clamouring at his door, would he have sold a picture."

Does the author mean:

"Even if all Park Lane had been clamouring at his door to buy a picture, the painter would have sold them none."

I am also not sure if I get the phrase bulging manner right. Does it mean conceited manner?

The Chute, Aleister Crowley, 1909

Thank you very much.

It is evidently dated usage. I have never seen "bulging manner" used in that way.
