Today, I received an answer to a confusing problem from a professor. I was very happy and almost cried while reading it.
Is there a way to express this feeling?

I was very happy and ... while reading your answer.
I thought about "burst into tears" but not sure if it sounds OK.
Thank you.

It doesn't work for me. How about tears came to my eyes?

If you only "almost cried", then you didn't actually cry so "burst into tears" definitely isn't appropriate.

It brought tears to my eyes?

It almost moved me to tears.

If you almost cried —

'I welled up.'

Well up

- Feel tears starting
- Feel an emotion strongly
- Experience an emotion or feeling, start to cry
(UsingEnglish Phrasal Verbs Dictionary)

It was an answer to a question maybe? (We solve problems. We don't answer them.)

I might say:

I was so filled with emotion that tears came to my eyes.

My eyes 'welled with tears (of joy)' ?

This covers those situations where you get tears in your eyes, but don't actually start crying.
