Why do waitress or waiters at the restaurant in U.S. ask the following questions? It feels like they want to buy us something. What does "get" exactly mean in such contexts?


Can I get you something to drink?
 
Nobody expects the server to buy us a drink. It means 'Can I bring you something to drink?'
