Is it correct to say waves cascade?

I found an example here:

http://austintexasdailyphoto.blogspot.com/2014/07/

These giant waves cascade toward the lagoon and lake at Laguna Gloria on Lake Austin.

I thought cascade is used for when water falls from a height.

Is this correct:

I went to the beach and saw waves cascading toward the sandy shore.

I don't find it very natural but I suppose it would work if the waves were really high. You're right about it normally used for water falling from a height. That's why "cascade" is sometimes used as another word for a waterfall.

I searched Google and most answers were about surface acoustic waves rather than the sea. It's not a very natural usage.

I don't mind it. Waves can appear to be tumbling.

I like it. I think it works well.
