Are the following sentences natural to native speakers?

1. When the actress came out and took a bow a the end of the show, many people shouted "Bravo."
2. When the actress came out and took a bow a the end of the show, many people cheer loudly.

The first is fine. The second would be fine if you replaced cheer with cheered.
