placidly reading copies of Yankee magazine ('Clamming on Cuttyhunk') or Reader's Digest ('Ten Ways to Help That Aching Back!'),
This is again a clause from The Secret History by Donna Tartt. What is 'Clamming on Cuttyhunk'?

Cuttyhunk is the name of a particular island off the coast of Massachusetts. Clamming refers to the activity of digging up clams from beaches.

I have to say I had absolutely no idea what Cuttyhunk was when I opened the thread- I was expecting some gross modern slang.

Go for it - it's yours to coin and define! Submit it to Urban Dictionary. Let us know so we can up-vote it.

Many years ago I submitted an entry to the Profanisaurus, a British dictionary of swearing and slang. I had forgotten about it and was looking at the new edition when I found my entry. I do agree that the world of slang needs this word.

I remember sobbing with laughter at Douglas Adams' The Meaning of Liff, in which he and John Lloyd used place names as definitions for things that BrE (at that time) had no word for.
My absolute favourite was Moisy but if I post their suggested definition, I'll be banned from the forum! ;-)
