climb up the stair plus go down the stairs

Speaking to toddlers, I typically use climb up the stairs as opposed to go up the stairs, but say go down the stairs instead of climb down the stairs. Does it sound natural?

Be careful climbing up the stairs. You don't want to fall and hurt yourself.
Be careful going down the stairs. You don't want to fall and hurt yourself.

Your sentences are OK, but needlessly complicated for toddlers.

'Be careful going upstairs/downstairs.'

Or even more simply, 'Be careful on the stairs'.

I don't, though I don't see why not. I would use climb if the child was still crawling.
