Hi,

When writing adverbs, I always have to check the dictionary the right spelling of the final part (-tely, -tly, -lly), like unfortunately, exactly

and coincidentally. Is there any rule about that or it's just a matter of memorizing them?

Thanks.

All of your examples have "ly" added to the original word.

Hello.:-D
I agree with bhaisahab.
They are all 'adjective + ly'.
So, the key is to learn how to spell the original word (adjective).:-D

Thank you bhaisahab and tzfujimino.;-)

I'm not a good speller. And I don't know why public becomes publicly instead of publically when other words take "ally." I have to look for the red squiggly line in Word that tells me I've made a mistake. If there's a rule, I don't know it, but I'd love to learn it. Is it because there is not "publical"?

Swan says simply: "If an adjective ends in -ic, the adverb ends in -ically [no explanation given - 5jj]. [...] Exception: public - publicly".

There is no rule.

Thank heavens for squiggly red lines, then.

Thank heavens for being able to switch off spell-check! Most of the sites I use refuse to let me choose "English - UK" and insist on me using "English - US" which of course means that, for me, it tells me that a lot of my correct spellings (BrE) are incorrect.
