Hi,
You can find a list of several collocations bellow. Can you help me to chose correct options. Thanks a lot.

1. seroius / full-scale war
2. pitched / fierce disagreement
3. blazing / sharp row
4. reached / created a compromise
5. The row was created / sparked off by...
6. an armed / a pitched battle

Welcome to the board, Lazar.

This looks like homework to me.

In any event, you should tell us what you think first.

Hi, and welcome to Using English.

The way our forum works is that you must provide your answer first.

Hi,

* When someone helps someone to do something, the person asking for help makes an effort. You could ask 'Would you help me by choosing...?'. You could ask... ;-) I look forward to seeing your choices.

PS Incidentally,
  • 'choose' and 'lose' - both present - /...u:z/
  • 'chose' and 'loose' - past simple and adjective - /ʧǝʊz/ and /lu:s/
(Even native speakers find this hard!)

And 'bellow' with two Ls is what a bull does; also, the stress is different from the stress in 'below':
  • 'below' - /bɪ'lǝʊ/
  • 'bellow' - /'belǝʊ/

Hi Lazar,

We come from the same part of the world.

Happy New Year!

Here are a few words concerning the matter in question.

1. an all-out war, a full-scale war, a total war, a global war, a world war

2. a bitter disagreement, a marked agreement, a serious disagreement, a sharp disagreement, a fierce disagreement

3. blazing row (Jude Law and Sienna Miller reportedly had a “blazing row” while on a night out in London.)

4. reached a compromise

5. created (How to delete the row created by AddAnotherRow button)

6. a bloody battle, a decisive battle, a fierce battle, a pitched battle, a raging battle, a losing battle, a running battle

[FONT=&quot]a pitched battle = an intense battle fought in close contact by troops arranged in a predetermined formation

V.

Vil, Lazar's been asked to give his/her own answers first.

You've just gone and done somebody's homework.

Hi Rover_KE,

Happy New Year,

I'm not a severe task master so I am able to afford not spare myself.

By the same token Lazar is my countryman.

I hope God will forgive this my peccadillo.

Apologies for spoiling the atmosphere when all was sweetness and light, but this is wrong. In the example cited by vil, presumably, what's 'creating a row' is a word-processing program adding to a table. This is a /rǝʊ/.

A row - /raʊ/ - is sparked off/provoked/triggered... - though a person who takes offence at the slightest provocation may 'create a fuss'; and colloquially this can be abbreviated (to make an apparent intransitive verb): 'Don't say a word; he'll only start creating again.' ;-)

God will no doubt forgive your answering the question, but He's likely to ask why you'd risk getting up the noses of two moderators and another regular replier to do it, for no obvious benefit to the OP, who will expect the same next time.
