Correct construction ( I shook his hand )

If I rewrite the sentence 'I shook his hand' in the following manner, are they correct?

1) I shook him by the hand.

2) I shook hands with him.

Your two alternative versions are both correct. The first is very formal and, to me, a little old-fashioned. The original and #2 are the most common.
