Exactly. You'll hear "kick up the arse" in BrE.

Kick in the arse in BrE = Kick in the ass in AmE. Replacing those words with seat makes it a minced oath. In other words, it's suitable in polite discourse because it has no profanity.

That’s interesting - in all these years (83 and counting, including two in the USA) I’ve never heard that before.

I call it a euphemism.

I'd heard the term but only in relation to removing religious references from expressions in order to make them non-offensive/blasphemous (for example, using "Oh my gosh!" instead of "Oh my god!") I didn't know it also referred to changing profanity to non-profanity. We live and learn.
