I wrote a sentence, "Currently, John is an artist." My Friend changed it to "He is currently an artist."
What's the difference?

I wrote [STRIKE]a[/STRIKE] the sentence no comma here "Currently, John is an artist." My friend changed it to "He is currently an artist."
What's the difference?

Note my corrections above. Both sentences are correct and mean the same, though your friend's version fails to name John.

Saying that he is currently an artist seems to suggest that it is a stage he is going through. At any minute he might decide he wants to do something else.

You probably want to make it clear that he makes ceramics. I assumed he was a painter.

I wouldn't use either with the word artist- artists tend not to be doing a temporary lifestyle- they may be doing a temporary job, often not in the arts, but rarely do they talk about having quit being artists.
