Deduction in the past

Is it right to say when you are making deductions in the past...
He was worried somebody could have killed his daughters

I would say: "He was worried about his daughters."

I don't know what "deductions in the past" means.

Is it right to say the following when you are talking about someone making deductions deducing something in the past?

He was worried somebody could have killed his daughters.

Note my corrections above. The sentence about his daughters is grammatically correct but I wouldn't say that he was deducing anything.

He hadn't heard from his daughters for over a week, their bank cards hadn't been used and their mobile phones were disconnected. He deduced that they were probably dead.
