Please, help me to understand whether the hero really went to university or not. Here is the context:

“I never went to school.» …
“So you went to the university without ever having gone to high school?” It seemed a logical question.
He breathed a deep, forlorn sigh. “Only wish I had. I got a scholarship because I scored so well on the tests, but never attended a day of class.»

Thank you.

We cannot tell from that extract whether or not he went to university.

Maybe you could explain is it scholarship for the university study? Could it be "class" in the university? And does "to be well on tests" relate to university or to the high school?
Thank you in advance.

We simply have insufficient information to be sure.

We know that he never went to school, that he scored well on some tests, and that is all we know from the context provided.

Where did you encounter this passage?

It is hard to tell exactly from this excerpt. My guess is that he scored so well on tests used to assess a person's preparedness for college (i.e. the SAT) that he was offered a scholarship to a college, but that he never actually attended any classes in college.
