It seems to me that A is more natural to my ears, but to be frank I couldn't find any reason why D cannot be correct.

They are too far away for what to happen? The answer to that can't be "They are too far for their distances conveniently measured". The second part of the sentence would be lacking a verb.

He is too far away to be heard.

I considered the second part of the sentence as a modifier.
"All stars are too far from the Earth for their distances." and I think it is a complete sentence.
"conveniently measured" is a modifier for distances.
It was the way I imagined for D.
