Could you tell me, if a book by a British author is published in the US, what happens to the spelling and syntax?
What I mean is that spelling and syntax differs in the UK and in the US. Will they just print what they have (preserve the spelling) or will they modify the spelling?

Examples: books by Agatha Christie, Joseph Rudyard Kipling, Arthur Conan Doyle.

I have a bit of experience in the book publishing business and my best guess is it depends on the publishing house and the content of the book. Often American publishers change a book's title to make it sell better in their opinion; less frequently they re-edit the whole text. In those cases they would substitute American for British spellings.
