Do I need to use quotes when referring to something?

[h=1][/h] Do I need to use quotes below? If no quotes are needed, still the word earthquake must start with capital? Or I must write only that word in italic and if so i dont need quotes or no need to start with caps? I want to use no quotes, no capital and no italic... Is it ok? Here it is:

You must use a capital.

You should mark the word in some way—either with 'inverted commas' or with italics. There's no need to use quotation marks because this is not a quotation.

We use double quotes or italics in American English.
