and 'distinguish' is the common word?

unless it is, what words are normally used instead 'distinguish'??

They often mean the same thing.
What's the context? If it's something like "Can you distinguish red from green?" then you can say "Can you tell red and green apart."

A good title for this one would have been Distinguish / tell apart.
